The Day That Changed Everything

On January 13, 2022, Brianna was working alone at the upscale Croft House boutique furniture store.

What should have been an ordinary day at work turned into a nightmare when Shawn Laval Smith entered the store.

Smith, a 34-year-old man with a history of criminal activity, was lurking around looking for a vulnerable target.

Unfortunately, Brianna was that target.

Around 1:36 p.m., Brianna texted a friend.

She expressed her discomfort about a man who had entered the store.

Sadly, her friend didn’t see the message in time.

Just 20 minutes later, a customer discovered Brianna’s lifeless body on the store floor, covered in blood.

She had been stabbed 46 times by Smith, who fled the scene.

The Hunt for a Killer

The investigation into Brianna’s murder began immediately.

Detectives from the LAPD scoured the scene for clues, and it wasn’t long before they made a shocking discovery.

Shawn Laval Smith had left behind not only the knife used in the attack but also an audio recorder.

This device contained a chilling recording of the moments leading up to Brianna’s death.

Smith could be heard taunting her in the audio while he stabbed her.

The recording, combined with DNA evidence found on the knife, sheath, and recorder, clearly identified Smith as the killer.

The police quickly launched a citywide manhunt for Smith, and the public was urged to help find him.

A $250,000 reward was offered for information leading to his arrest, and soon, tips started pouring in.

Six days after the murder, police received a tip that Smith had been spotted sitting on a bus bench in downtown Pasadena.

Thanks to the combined efforts of law enforcement and the community, Smith was arrested and taken into custody.
