A 26-year-old man was shot and killed by police after allegedly carjacking an Uber driver.
This incident has led to an investigation by the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
The incident occurred last Friday evening, just before midnight, on 10th Avenue North near Garfield Street.
According to police, the suspect, Adam Rodriguez, and his girlfriend were driving a Kia when they collided with an Uber driver’s Honda minivan.
Following the collision, Rodriguez and his girlfriend allegedly carjacked the Uber driver at gunpoint.
This all happened near 8th Avenue and Rosa Parks Boulevard in downtown Nashville.
Less than 30 minutes after the carjacking, officers located the stolen Honda minivan in North Nashville.
Police deployed a spike strip, which flattened the minivan’s tires.
The then followed the vehicle onto 10th Avenue North, where the situation escalated.
MNPD officer Pierce Moore pursued Rodriguez to the back of a nearby home.
According to body camera footage, Officer Moore repeatedly instructed Rodriguez to “drop the gun” as the suspect moved toward the back porch of the residence.
When Rodriguez raised the gun in his hand, Officer Moore opened fire, striking him.
Police immediately rendered aid to Rodriguez, who was then transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Despite efforts to save him, Rodriguez was pronounced dead.
As standard protocol, Officer Moore has been placed on routine administrative assignment.
The TBI and MNPD are conducting a thorough investigation into the use of force.
Don Aaron, a spokesperson for the Metro Nashville Police Department, emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages and will take time to complete.
“The TBI and the police department conduct thorough use of force investigations,” Aaron stated.
“This investigation is at the early stages and will take time to complete,” he added.
In addition to the TBI’s involvement, the Davidson County District Attorney’s office will be working closely with investigators to analyze the details of the incident.
MNPD will also conduct an internal review of the actions and tactics used by the officers involved in the shooting.
This ongoing investigation aims to shed light on the events leading up to the shooting and determine whether the use of force was justified.
