The Incident : What Did Quanesha Johnson Do?

The night before the shooting, Quanesha Johnson had reportedly gone out clubbing, leaving her three children with Smith.

When Johnson didn’t return home by 6 a.m., Smith became worried and tried calling her, but her phone was switched off.

She had mentioned being involved in a physical altercation the night before, which heightened his concern.

After several unanswered calls, Smith contacted Johnson’s family, leading them to search hospitals and jails.

By 9 a.m., Johnson finally turned her phone back on and noticed several messages from Smith.

During a tense phone conversation, Smith threatened to harm her when she returned home.

Feeling unsafe, Quenesha Johnson called 911 and requested an escort home.

While waiting for the officers, she grabbed her licensed firearm for protection.

When police officers arrived, they instructed Johnson to place her firearm in her car for safety while they attempted to calm the situation with Smith.

The officers called both of them together, talked to them, and de-escalated the situation.

They then left the scene, believing the couple would resolve their differences.

Sadly, a few minutes later, the officers were called back to the scene, where they found that Smith had been shot.

Johnson had reportedly retrieved the tire iron and gun from her car, struck Smith in the head with the iron, and then shot him.

Smith stumbled outside just as the officers were returning, telling them he had been attacked before collapsing.

While official statements claimed Johnson was out clubbing, police body cam footage reveals a different story.

Johnson described herself as having been at work and not partying as she worked as a striper at the time.

In the footage, Quanesha could be seen telling Smith that he was broke, while Smith taunted her for still being a stripper at 30.

It was evident that he wasn’t happy with her job at all.

This all hinted at deeper tensions between Johnson and Smith, suggesting that their relationship had been strained for some time.

The insults and frustrations expressed on camera pointed to unresolved issues that ultimately escalated to the tragic incident.

Smith had been scheduled to leave the house, but his life was cut short minutes before his rideshare arrived.

His final words were a desperate cry for help: “She hit me in the head with a metal thing and then shot me. Hurry up before I die.”

Despite Johnson initially instructing one of her children to call 911, Smith sadly passed away.

Quanesha Johnson's Trial and Sentence

During the trial, Johnson was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children, among other charges.

However, she was acquitted of malice murder.

Prosecutors had pushed for a 25-year prison sentence.

However, Judge Shondeana Morris gave Johnson a significantly lighter sentence, citing the circumstances of the case.

The judge acknowledged that Johnson acted out of fear for her safety due to past threats from Smith.

This included a prior assault where he had physically harmed her.

In her statement, Judge Morris emphasized that the police had allowed both Johnson and Smith to return to the house without cooling off, which led to the tragic outcome.
