Authorities in Missouri have confirmed the identity of human remains found in a remote sinkhole in September 2024.
The remains belong to 40-year-old Jacob Wayne Berney, who was reported missing from Branson on July 18, 2024, according to DNASolves.
Berney’s disappearance had remained a mystery since the summer of 2024, with little information released by law enforcement.
But now, thanks to forensic DNA analysis and investigative genetic genealog, officials have finally put a name to the remains—and a family may now begin the process of finding closure.
Discovery in the Depths: Remote Sinkhole Becomes Crime Scene
In September 2024, a worker made a shocking discovery during a routine geological study near Top of the Rock, a natural attraction in Taney County, Missouri.
While taking photos of the rock formations, the worker stumbled upon skeletal remains.
According to police reports, the remains were buried under rock debris in a secluded, off-limits area not accessible to the public.
The man’s body was found face-down with multiple visible fractures, one Nike shoe partially on, and large rocks placed on his back.
The location was deep within collapsed rock, approximately 80 to 100 feet below the nearest rock formation, raising immediate questions: How did the victim get there—and why?
Advanced DNA Testing Lead to Break in the Case
After the disturbing discovery, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Taney County Coroner’s Office were called to the scene.
However, traditional identification methods couldn’t determine the victim's identity.
They then partnered with a leading forensic company called Othram, to conduct more extensive testing using advanced DNA services.
Forensic experts used KinSNP® Rapid Relationship Testing to compare DNA from the remains with a sample provided by a potential relative.
Luckily, this advanced DNA method led to a match .
In December 2024, the remains were officially identified as Jacob Berney, nearly three months after his remains were found.
Jacob Berney was born on September 27, 1983, and was reported missing in July 2024.
This case is another powerful example of how advancement in forensic science is reshaping missing person investigations.
By combining genetic testing with access to various DNA databases, law enforcement can now identify unknown remains faster than ever.
If you have a loved one who’s been missing, no matter how long, don’t lose hope.
Advancements in DNA has helped countless families reconnect with their lost loved ones after many years of silence.
Trusted websites like 23andMe and AncestryDNA allow you to upload your DNA profile online.
Police regularly use these databases to find relatives of unidentified persons with them, and your DNA might be the match that brings someone home.
Unanswered Questions About Jacob's Death
