In a heart-wrenching incident in Lower Makefield Township, Pennsylvania, a father and his 8-year-old son lost their lives in a murder-suicide inside their home.
Police responded to a wellness check at the residence on Heritage Oak Drive around 6 p.m. on Thursday.
When there was no response at the door, officers peered through a window and saw an unresponsive boy on the living room floor.
Concerned for their safety, the officers forcibly entered the home and discovered both the 8-year-old boy and his 47-year-old father suffering from gunshot wounds.
Tragically, both were pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by Lower Makefield Police Chief Kenneth Coluzzi.
The investigation revealed that the cause of death was indeed a murder-suicide, with the father responsible for the tragic act. No one else was present in the house during the shooting.
The police recovered a handgun, and while the identities of the deceased are known, the authorities are withholding this information until the family members have been notified.
In light of this devastating event, the boy's school district, Pennsbury School District, is providing grief counseling and support for his friends and classmates.
Adding to the community's grief, the neighboring areas of Upper Makefield have recently experienced severe flooding that resulted in five fatalities and two missing children.
The flooding also caused damage to homes in Lower Makefield.
Chief Coluzzi expressed the sadness of dealing with such a tragedy, particularly when a child is involved.
The community, already burdened by the recent natural calamity, is now coping with another heart-wrenching loss.
Meanwhile in another case, a woman killed her kid after she mistakenly ran her over in their driveway. See details here
