India: Teenage Girl Forced to Have Abortion After Being Raped by Government Official

A 17-year-old girl, who says she was hurt repeatedly and impregnated by an officer from the Delhi government, is now sharing her difficult experience during counseling, while she gets treatment in the hospital.

When she was just 14, she went to live with a friend of her dad's after her dad died in 2020.

This friend, who is a senior officer in the Delhi government's Women and Child Department (WCD), is currently in custody for allegedly raping the girl between November 2020 and January 2021 and causing her pregnancy.

Now at the age of 17, the girl went through a lot of mental pain and fear when her pregnancy was terminated, which led her to talk about the terrible things she went through.

During counseling, she opened up about the bad experiences she had to endure.

The victim was a 12th grade student who went to live with the accused man, Premoday Khakha, and his family after her father passed away.

Khakha, whom is pictured above, is a deputy director at the Women and Child Department in India.

Because he was her guardian, the girl used to call the accused man "mama" (maternal uncle).

After sharing her story during the counseling session, the police filed a complaint against the accused man and his wife, charging them with raping her under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The wife is accused of giving the girl pills to end the pregnancy, and she's also in police custody.

Preparations are being made to have the girl tell her story to a legal official using Section 164 of the CrPC. However, doctors say she's not yet ready to do that, according to the DCP (North).

Her statement will be officially recorded once her condition improves.

In another news, a former respiratory therapist has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the death of two patients who died under her care. See detailed story here
