A South Carolina woman, Stacy Michelle Rabon, has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal killing of her newborn daughter in 1992.
Rabon was convicted of homicide by child abuse by a York County jury earlier this month.
The jury found Rabon guilty of stabbing the baby more than 50 times before placing the body in a plastic Sears shopping bag and discarding it in a river.
The crime remained unsolved for decades until DNA evidence recovered from the sheet used to wrap the newborn's body led investigators back to Rabon.
Despite the life sentence, Rabon will be eligible for parole after eight years due to the state's sentencing laws at the time of the crime.
However, Judge Bill McKinnon expressed his belief that Rabon deserved to spend the rest of her life behind bars.
He emphasized the brutality of the crime, stating that the newborn was stabbed more than 50 times.
The case had a significant impact on the community, with community members naming the unidentified child "Angel Hope" and coming together to provide a proper burial. Rabon addressed the court for the first time during the sentencing, acknowledging her poor choices and asking for mercy.
