Santos De La Rosa : Arrest Made in Brutal Convenience Store Attack in California Over Two Cans of Beer
In California, a 21-year-old guy got arrested last month for allegedly beating up a convenience store worker to death with a baseball bat. This all went down after the worker caught him trying to steal two cans of beer. Santos De La Rosa is now facing charges of murder, second-degree robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon for the tragic event that happened in August, as announced by authorities this week.
The San Francisco Police Department got a call around 9:31 p.m. on August 24 about a robbery and assault at a Richmond Market convenience store on Balboa Street.
When they got there, they found a 60-year-old store clerk, later identified as Yohannes "John" Tewolde, lying unconscious on the ground. Tewolde suffered life-threatening injuries, and despite efforts by hospital staff, he passed away on August 29 after being in a coma for several days.
Police checked the store's security camera footage and released pictures of the suspect, who was seen holding two cans of beer before the attack. An arrest warrant for De La Rosa was issued on September 12 in connection with the attack.
According to the criminal complaint, De La Rosa tried to steal two cans of beer, and Tewolde tried to stop him by standing in front of the exit with a baseball bat. But De La Rosa didn't back down; he took the bat from Tewolde and brutally beat him.
After the assault, De La Rosa even grabbed one of the beers he had tried to steal earlier, threw the bat at another person in the store, and hopped into a waiting car that drove away.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins expressed gratitude to the police for identifying and apprehending De La Rosa and thanked the victim's family and friends for their patience and trust in the justice system.
De La Rosa is set to appear for his arraignment, and prosecutors plan to request his detention pending trial, citing a potential public safety risk if he's released.
