In Alabama, a tragic incident unfolded as a mother lost her life in a domestic-related murder, leaving a community in shock.
On Monday around noon, the Jefferson County Sheriff's office responded to a distress call at a residence on Birmingham's northeast side.
Witnesses recounted that 48-year-old Emell Peavy, the suspect, had shot his girlfriend, April Britton, aged 37, in the backyard of the home while her children watched in horror. The children fled the scene, desperately flagging down a passing vehicle for assistance.
A passerby, along with her husband, was driving when they encountered two teenage girls frantically signaling for help. She got out of the car, and one of the girls conveyed that their mother had been shot, prompting a call to 911. Meanwhile, Peavy arrived in his car, and the girls pointed him out as the shooter, exclaiming, "That's who shot my mama."
The passerby's husband took quick action, holding Peavy at gunpoint until the police arrived, ensuring the suspect didn't escape.
Emell Peavy was subsequently taken into custody and held in the Jefferson County Jail, facing a capital murder charge, with no possibility of bond.
April Britton's sister, Jelissa Britton, created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for her burial expenses. April, a mother of three, was tragically victimized by what her sister described as "senseless and horrible" domestic violence.
In her heartfelt message, Jelissa highlighted April's kindness and sweetness. April was not only a loving mother but also a caring sister and a loyal friend to all who knew her.
April Britton leaves behind three children, aged 20, 17, and 13. She dedicated herself to homeschooling the younger two, leaving a lasting impact on her family and the community.
"She was beloved and will forever be loved, despite no longer being with us," expressed her sister on the GoFundMe page.
