Texas Woman Faces 75-Year Sentence for Shocking Abuse and Torture

A 37-year-old woman from Texas is looking at a long prison term for deceiving a 24-year-old woman into living with her and her family, only to imprison her and subject her to horrific abuse, including burning her with boiling water, starving her, locking her in a cage, and isolating her from others.

Alicia Sanchez Calderon has been sentenced to 75 years in a state correctional facility by District Court Judge George B. Flint, with authorities revealing the shocking details of the victim's ordeal.

Calderon lured the victim into her home, where she subjected her to unimaginable cruelty. She inflicted severe burns on the victim's arms, chest, and back by scalding her with boiling water. She also deprived her of food, locked her in a dog crate, and cut off her communication with the outside world.

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis expressed hope that this sentence would aid the victim in healing from the deep physical and emotional wounds inflicted by Calderon.

Calderon had previously been found guilty by a jury on one count of first-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury to a household member.

The victim initially moved into Calderon's trailer in 2019 as part of an arrangement where she would help with housekeeping, care for Calderon's children, and assist a disabled elderly woman in exchange for free accommodation.

However, this agreement soured over time.

Calderon's mistreatment of the victim escalated, starting with confiscating her phone and later restricting her access to food and movement in and out of the trailer. The situation deteriorated further when Calderon locked the victim in a room with the elderly woman, whose condition had severely worsened. The victim's health declined drastically, leading to her losing over half of her body weight and becoming unable to care for the elderly woman.

In July 2021, Calderon's cruelty reached a horrifying climax when she caught the emaciated victim trying to sneak food. In response, she locked the victim in a dog crate and poured boiling water on her, causing severe burns to her legs. Later that year, during an argument, Calderon poured boiling water on the victim again, resulting in severe burns on her arms, chest, and back. Shockingly, Calderon denied the victim medical treatment.

It was not until February 2022 that the victim managed to borrow a phone from a child in the household to contact her stepfather, breaking two years of isolation. Her stepfather immediately called 911, and law enforcement officers responded to the trailer, freeing the victim by removing obstacles from the door.

The victim was found in a horrifying state, weighing only 68 pounds, with a shaved head, and covered in second and third-degree burns. She underwent multiple surgeries, including skin grafts, during her six-week hospitalization to recover from her extensive injuries and malnourishment.

During the trial's punishment phase, prosecutors also presented evidence that Calderon had spent $78,000 of her elderly relative's recently received inheritance within three months and had been misusing the woman's social security checks on various personal expenses, including tattoos, car rims, and a party rental business.

In another development, in the early morning hours of September 23rd, the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center's emergency department contacted the Bemidji Police Department and reported a suspected sexual assault involving an 11-year-old girl. See detailed story here
