A well-known advocate for fairness and justice, tied closely to the world of Hollywood, was fatally shot in his home in Los Angeles on Monday.
Michael Latt, aged 33, was shot by an intruder at his residence, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Police Department. Jameelah Elena Michl, 36, was arrested at the scene and charged with suspicion of murder.
She remains in custody on a $3 million bond.
Police arrived at Latt’s home around 6 p.m. on Monday, rushing him to the hospital, where he passed away due to the injuries sustained. Michl was apprehended at the site of the alleged shooting and taken into custody. It remains uncertain whether she has sought legal representation.
Latt, hailing from a family connected to Hollywood—his parents being producers David Latt and Michelle Satter, and his brother an agent at Creative Arts Agency—was known for his dedication to supporting artists. In a post on X (previously Twitter), Satter mourned her son’s loss, highlighting his commitment to promoting artists of color and utilizing storytelling for societal change.
As the CEO of Lead With Love, a marketing firm focusing on uplifting artists of color, Latt had garnered recognition as an award-winning strategist and producer. He spearheaded various national campaigns and creative projects alongside influential figures such as Common, Ryan Coogler, Netflix, and more.
Latt’s legacy encompassed his passion for supporting women and artists of color through storytelling and artistic endeavors, aiming to instigate enduring transformations and inspire hope and love within communities.
Numerous Hollywood acquaintances shared their condolences across social media platforms, acknowledging Latt’s impactful presence and kindness.
“Michael Latt’s murder is an immeasurable loss,” expressed Franklin Leonard, the founder of The Black List, on X. “He embodied the best in us. Rest in Power, my friend,” he added.
Jesse Williams, an actor, paid homage, commenting on an Instagram post from Latt’s account about the devastating loss, while actress America Ferrera conveyed her sympathy for the departed activist.
