Justice Served: "Scary Larry" Receives 25-Year Sentence in Gruesome Missouri Kidnapping and Murder

In a gruesome Missouri kidnapping and murder case from 2020, Lawrence William Vaughan, known as "Scary Larry," a co-conspirator in the nightmare scenario where Michael James Hall was brutally beaten, cut, and tortured, has received a 25-year prison sentence without the possibility of parole. Vaughan, admitting his role in the conspiracy, disclosed that he was offered $5,000 to find and kidnap Hall.

Vaughan, 52, was charged alongside co-conspirators Freddie Lewis “Ol’ Boy” Tilton, Carla Jo Ward, Amy Kay Thomas, James B. Gibson, and Russell Eugene “Uncle” Hurtt. Vaughan's co-defendants have all pleaded guilty and await sentencing.

Prosecutors detailed the horrifying assault, indicating that Hall was bound, duct-taped, and subjected to a brutal attack initiated by Gibson and Thomas in Vaughan's home.

The assault included cutting, beating, shooting at, and burning Hall with a blowtorch. Tilton, delivering the fatal blow by firing a bullet into Hall’s skull, was responsible for Hall's death.

Vaughan played a role in cleaning up the crime scene and concealing evidence. The perpetrators transported Hall's body to another property owned by Hurtt in Joplin, Missouri, where it was later discovered by police.

Tilton, arrested for the kidnapping of another woman days after Hall's abduction, engaged in a standoff with police but was not initially arrested for Hall's murder. Hall's badly decomposed body was found on Tilton's property, along with an array of firearms, including guns without serial numbers.

Prosecutors uncovered a burned cell phone containing photos and screenshots from a video of Hall being assaulted.

In February, Vaughan pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm while being an unlawful user of a controlled substance and possessing two stolen firearms. The violence stemmed from a dispute involving a stolen vehicle, with text messages revealing Tilton accusing Hall of being a "rat."

The defendants faced charges of kidnapping resulting in death and using a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in murder.
