In a case that captured national attention due to its peculiar details, two teenagers were recently sentenced. They received a 12-year prison term and 2 years and 9 months in community custody for their involvement in the robbery and killing of a man.
The primary focus of the case was on one of the defendants, Gabriel Michael Davies.
This tragic incident unfolded in Pierce County, Washington, where the victim, 51-year-old Daniel McCaw, had a prior connection to Davies' mother. According to prosecutors, Gabriel Michael Davies and Justin Jiwoon Yoon, both 16 at the time (now 17), burglarized McCaw's home on August 28, 2022.
Authorities' investigations revealed that the two teenagers were captured on surveillance footage, surreptitiously entering McCaw's residence through a dog door. Less than an hour later, McCaw left his detached garage, entering his home, but he never emerged.
Davies and Yoon exited the house through a side door, frequently running back and forth to the garage while carrying various items.
Remarkably, it was Gabriel Michael Davies who initially drew law enforcement's attention, not as a suspect, but as a possible victim. In Thurston County, deputies reported him missing on September 1, 2022, after he failed to appear for football practice.
The teenager, who played football at Olympia High School, became the subject of a search after his truck was discovered near Tenino, in the vicinity of the 16100 block of Tilley Road S. The vehicle's keys remained in the ignition, blood was found inside, the driver's side door was open, and a smashed cellphone lay on the ground.
Yet, there was no sign of Davies. Deputies were informed by his father, the registered owner of the vehicle, that the teen was supposed to be heading to football practice.
The authorities conducted an extensive search for the missing teenager, eventually locating him on September 2, 2022, at the 13600 block of Tilley Road S. During a press conference, Thurston County Sheriff John Sanza disclosed that Davies had been wandering alone and told authorities he had been on his own for the previous 24 hours.
However, investigators eventually established a connection between Davies, Yoon, and McCaw's death. They concluded that the young football player had staged his own disappearance.
Consequently, Davies and Yoon pleaded down from charges of first-degree murder to second-degree murder.
