A 22-year-old New Hampshire man is on trial for allegedly shooting and killing another man outside of a popular Manchester bar. John DeLee claims he acted in self-defense, but prosecutors argue he was not the aggressor.
DeLee and the victim, Timothy Pouliot, got into a verbal altercation inside The Goat Bar and Grill on January 28, 2023. Tensions escalated after someone from Pouliot's group allegedly got too close to one of the women in DeLee's group.
Pouliot was later heard saying he could "punch out" DeLee because he was a professional fighter. DeLee, in response, allegedly flashed a gun and said, "I'm not worried, I have protection."
The two men were later seen chatting at the bar, but things turned physical when Pouliot's friend punched DeLee in the face. Bouncers broke up the fight and escorted DeLee out of the bar.
Outside the bar, a fight broke out between DeLee and Pouliot's friends. Cellphone video showed Pouliot punching DeLee in the face, prompting DeLee to pull out a gun and fire multiple shots.
Pouliot died from multiple gunshot wounds. DeLee was arrested shortly after the altercation.
DeLee's defense team argues that he acted in self-defense when he shot Pouliot, but prosecutors say he was not the aggressor. They also want to question DeLee about whether he heard a statement before the shooting that Pouliot and his friends had guns on them.
The trial is expected to last several days.
