A longhorn was found dead outside of an Oklahoma State fraternity house on the morning of Friday, December 8th, just one day before the university's football team is scheduled to play the University of Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 championship game.
The longhorn's carcass was discovered in the front yard of the FarmHouse fraternity at 6:39 a.m. by police officers who were responding to a call about a dead animal. The Stillwater Police Department is currently investigating the incident, and the person responsible could face an animal cruelty charge, which is a felony in the state of Oklahoma.
The FarmHouse Fraternity has released a statement saying that none of its members were involved in the incident and that they do not condone cruelty or defacing of livestock. The fraternity also said that the longhorn's carcass was "branded" in an "inappropriate manner" with a phrase referencing their chapter.
Oklahoma State University has also released a statement condemning the incident and saying that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation. University President Dr. Kayse Shrum called the act "shocking and deeply disturbing" and said that the university expects authorities to prosecute the case to the full extent of the law.
The OSU Cowboys are currently in second place in the Big 12 Conference and will play the University of Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 championship game on Saturday, December 9th, at 12 p.m. at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
