Macy's Security Guard Killed in Brutal Stabbing by Alleged Shoplifter

A security guard at Macy's Center City department store in Philadelphia was tragically killed and another was critically injured in a brutal stabbing attack on Monday morning. The incident occurred after an attempted shoplifting incident, according to police.

At around 11 a.m., a male suspect, whose name has not been released by police, was spotted allegedly stealing multiple hats by security guards. After a confrontation, the suspect surrendered the merchandise and left the store.

However, approximately 15 minutes later, the suspect returned to the department store armed with a knife and viciously attacked the two unarmed security guards, police said.

One of the security guards, a 30-year-old man, was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 11:19 a.m., according to Fox 29, 6abc, and NBC10. The second guard, a 23-year-old man, remains in stable condition.

Police apprehended the suspect after he fled the scene.

In a statement obtained by 6abc, a Macy's spokesperson expressed the company's deep sorrow over the incident and stated that the store would be temporarily closed to cooperate with the police investigation.

Interim Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Stanford acknowledged the prevalence of retail thefts at the Center City Macy's store, highlighting over 250 reported incidents so far this year.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by retail workers and the importance of addressing shoplifting and theft prevention measures.
