A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after his father was found stabbed to death in Hackney, east London, on Boxing Day. Michael John Murphy, 58, was attacked at around 3am on Cranwood Street, close to Old Street tube station. Despite receiving medical attention at the scene, he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
The Metropolitan Police stated the attack occurred following an argument involving approximately 10 people. Four individuals, including two men aged 49 and 42, and two women aged 35 and 44, were initially arrested on suspicion of murder but later released without further action.
The suspect, 38, and Mr. Murphy were acquainted and had been living a "temporary lifestyle" in the Shoreditch area. Police located and arrested the suspect on Monday in connection with Mr. Murphy's death.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, leading the investigation, expressed sympathy for Mr. Murphy's family during this difficult time. He acknowledged the shock this tragedy caused over the Christmas period and reiterated the appeal for witnesses to come forward.
Mr. Murphy's death sadly follows a string of fatal stabbings in London during the Christmas and New Year's period. In a separate incident, 16-year-old Harry Pitman was tragically stabbed to death on Primrose Hill as people gathered for the New Year's fireworks display. The Metropolitan Police released an image of the victim and confirmed the arrest of another 16-year-old suspect on suspicion of murder.
