Houston Gang Member Sentenced to 40 Years for Murdering Neighbor

A Houston jury convicted Robert E. Chenier, 32, of murdering his neighbor, Shaun Lewis, 37, in Clinton Park in November 2020.

Chenier, a documented member of the notorious 52 Hoover Crips gang, received a 40-year prison sentence late last Friday, according to Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg.

Investigators revealed that Chenier and Lewis knew each other, having grown up in the same area.

It all started on the night of the murder when Chenier, involved in an earlier dispute, shot up a house on Cartersville Street after midnight.

Unknown to Chenier, Lewis and another man witnessed the shooting on the quiet, semi-rural street.

Chenier confronted Lewis and the other man, apparently with the intent to rob them.

He stole a pistol from the second man, who then fled the scene.

Lewis, unarmed and wanting to avoid conflict, raised his hands in surrender, offering Chenier whatever he wanted.

Despite Lewis's pleas, Chenier shot him, inflicting a wound.

Lewis attempted to escape but collapsed in a nearby field.

In a horrifying act of cruelty, Chenier approached the wounded Lewis.

Even as Lewis begged for his life, Chenier coldly shot him again in the head, taking his life.

To add further insult to injury, Chenier took a photograph of Lewis's lifeless body.

Following the murder, Chenier bragged about his actions to several people.

The Houston Police Department swiftly pieced together the events, leading to Chenier's arrest and murder charge.

This known criminal finally faced the consequences of his violent behavior.

In a statement, District Attorney Ogg expressed her sorrow for Lewis's family and her gratitude to the jury for holding Chenier accountable.

She stated, "This case exemplifies the devastating impact of gang violence on our community.  We mourn the loss of Shaun Lewis and commend the jury for ending this reign of terror."
