Detectives were alerted to an article in Mexicali reporting an unidentified body found in a local cemetery. After coordination with Mexican authorities, Hernandez was identified over the weekend.
A 61-year-old Renton resident is currently in custody in Mexico, where they also found Hernandez’s vehicle.
The department believes this was a domestic violence crime, adding that while her death has been confirmed as a homicide, they are determining where it occurred to decide on extradition.
Renton Police Department public information officer Meeghan Black had expressed concerns for Hernandez's safety prior to her discovery, citing evidence suggesting she was taken against her will.
After her body was found, authorities were able to locate her vehicle. Hernandez had been reported missing on February 28 when she didn't return home from errands and didn't open her small business.
German Sahagun, who knew Hernandez for years, described her as outspoken and friendly.
He recalled her behavior seemed off the last time he saw her, noting her usual outgoing nature was subdued that day.
