Innocent Roommate Mistakenly Shot Dead by Woman Attempting to Kill Ex-Boyfriend

Memphis woman, Kiauna Newsom, faces a first-degree murder charge for allegedly shooting George Harris in a case of mistaken identity.

A Memphis woman, Kiauna Newsom (29), is facing a first-degree murder charge after allegedly shooting and killing George Harris in what authorities believe was a case of mistaken identity.

The tragic incident unfolded on March 2nd when Memphis police responded to reports of a shooting outside a residence. Upon arrival, they found George Harris unresponsive inside a parked car, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators piecing together the events leading up to the shooting reviewed surveillance footage from a nearby camera. The footage reportedly showed a car matching the description of Newsom's vehicle following Harris' car shortly before the shooting.

This crucial lead led them to Harris' roommate, who is also Newsom's ex-boyfriend. He revealed to detectives that Harris was driving his car when the shooting occurred and expressed his belief that he was the intended target, not Harris. He further stated that he had just loaned his car to Harris, who was subsequently shot a short while later.

Newsom's ex-boyfriend also informed authorities about an argument he had with Newsom at a store before the shooting. He said he left the store and went home, where Harris then asked to borrow his car.

Investigators, armed with this information, visited Newsom's residence and located a car matching the description from the surveillance footage. Additionally, the homeowner provided authorities with security footage showing Newsom returning home shortly after the shooting.

Newsom, upon being taken into custody, agreed to speak with investigators. She admitted to driving her car while searching for her ex-boyfriend's vehicle with another person identified as Justin Howard. According to her statement, they spotted the car and Howard allegedly fired multiple shots into it with a rifle. Newsom claims she then fled the scene with Howard.

Newsom was presented with a photo lineup and identified Howard, who is still at large as of this writing. Newsom is currently being held without bond in the Shelby County Jail and is scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday.

It is important to note that while Newsom has been charged with murder, the investigation is ongoing. The information presented here is based on the affidavit and does not determine her guilt or innocence.
