Michigan Mother, Antoinette Briley Sentenced for 2003 Deaths of Newborn Twins

A Michigan woman named Antoinette Briley will spend the next 20 years behind bars after admitting guilt in the deaths of her newborn twin sons back in 2003.

Briley, who was 44 years old at the time of her sentencing, pleaded guilty to murder charges in a Chicago courthouse on Tuesday, May 7th.

The sentence was handed down by Judge Terry Gallagher.

This case began in December 2020 when Briley was arrested.

According to authorities, she confessed to her role in the twins' deaths and how she disposed of their bodies.

The initial charges against her included two counts of first-degree murder, stemming from the suffocation deaths of her infant boys.

The tragic story unfolded when a waste management worker discovered the remains of the twins inside a garbage truck.

The location of the discovery was a trash bin in an alleyway within Stickney, Illinois.

Investigators determined the babies were likely killed shortly after birth, with one of them even still having the umbilical cord attached.

Despite their best efforts, detectives were unable to identify any suspects, and the case remained unsolved for over a decade.

However, in 2018, there was a breakthrough.

Using a relatively new investigative technique called genetic genealogy, investigators were finally able to connect the babies' DNA to Briley.

Following this lead, detectives traveled to Briley's hometown in Holland, Michigan.

There, they managed to find an item belonging to her that was "strongly linked" to the twins' DNA, as reported by WLS-TV.

This evidence secured a warrant for her arrest.

Authorities revealed during a press conference that Briley, then 24 years old, gave birth to the twins alone at her grandfather's house, all while taking a bath.

They explained that she panicked when the babies started crying, not knowing how to handle the situation.

In a moment of desperation, she placed them in a duffel bag and intended to drive them to a nearby hospital.

However, during the drive, Briley reportedly stopped her car and found a garbage bin nearby.

She took the babies out of the bag and placed them in the bin before returning home.

Back at her grandfather's house, she disposed of the duffel bag and then went on to watch television and sleep as if nothing had happened.

It's important to note that Briley has another daughter who, according to police, is safe.

Briley will serve her sentence at the Illinois Department of Corrections.
