Daniel Wayne Callihan: Louisiana Man Pleads Guilty to Kidnapping and Killing Mother and Child in

In 2024, Callie Brunett was found brutally stabbed to death in her home in Loranger, Louisiana.

Her two young daughters were also missing from the house, and tragically only one was found alive.

Daniel Wayne Callihan, the man accused of these horrific crimes, has pleaded guilty, and this plea ensures that he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Callie Brunett and her daughters

It all began on June 12, 2024, when Callie Brunett, a 35-year-old mother from Loranger, Louisiana, was found dead in her home.

According to police reports, she had been stabbed more than 50 times in a brutal attack.

After preliminary investigations, detectives quickly identified Daniel Wayne Callihan as the prime suspect.

He was her ex-boyfriend, and the two had dated on and off before their relationship turned sour, according to PEOPLE.

After killing Brunett, Callihan kidnapped her two young daughters, 4-year-old Erin and her 6-year-old sister, before fleeing the scene in Brunett’s car.

When police discovered the girls were missing, they issued an Amber Alert, fearing the worst.

Surveillance footage and witness statements helped track Callihan’s movements as he had already crossed state lines into Mississippi.

At some point, Callihan picked up an accomplice, Victoria Cox, before driving to a property in Jackson, Mississippi.

According to court records, Callihan and his accomplice sexually assaulted the 6-year-old girl before he smothered 4-year-old Erin to death.

On June 13, 2024, law enforcement tracked Callihan to a property on Boozier Drive in Jackson, where he was arrested.

Tragically, Erin’s lifeless body was found dumped in a shallow pit, while her older sister was discovered alive but deeply traumatized.

While he was in custody, Callihan shockingly admitted his crimes, and he even told a WDSU reporter on camera that he "unfortunately" killed Erin.

Additionally, he said that he had borderline personality disorder, and he also claimed he had no reason for his actions.

In August 2025, Callihan pleaded guilty to kidnapping resulting in death and transporting a minor across state lines for criminal sexual activity.

As part of his plea deal, he avoided the death penalty, however, he will now spend the rest of his life in prison when he’s sentenced on November 19, 2025.

“Today’s resolution ensures that Daniel Wayne Callihan will be held accountable for his heinous and atrocious crimes... This successful prosecution is the result of the significant collaboration by local, state, and federal agencies,” said acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson.

His accomplice, Victoria Cox, is currently facing charges that include first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, second-degree kidnapping, and accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

A GoFundMe created by Brunett’s family described Erin as a “little fireball bursting with energy and love.

They also said Callie and her girls were a couple of peas in a pod,” showing the deep bond that was shattered by this senseless violence.

While justice is being served, nothing can bring back Callie and Erin Brunett.

The surviving 6-year-old girl now faces a long road to recovery—both physically and emotionally.
