Harriett Recker: 82-Year-Old Woman Accused of Fatally Shooting Her Husband Inside Hilton Head Assisted Living Facility
In Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, authorities are investigating a tragic case involving 82-year-old Harriett Kay Recker.
She’s accused of shooting her 81-year-old husband, Dennis Recker, inside an assisted living facility on September 12, 2025.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a shooting around 10:30 a.m. at the Preston Health Center located at The Cypress.
It is a retirement community that offers both short- and long-term care for residents, including memory care services.
When officers arrived, they found Dennis Recker suffering from a gunshot wound. He was given immediate medical attention, but sadly, he did not survive.
Dennis Recker had only been admitted to the facility the day before the shooting due to medical complications that required extra care.
On the morning of the incident, a neighbor had driven Harriett to visit her husband in the facility.
When they arrived, they noticed that a chair was missing from Dennis' room.
The neighbor stepped out to find another one — but moments later, a loud gunshot echoed through the hallway.
When staffs rushed back to the room to know what happened, they reportedly found Harriett holding a revolver while her husband clutched his chest.
According to Law&Crime, one witness recalled hearing Dennis say, “She shot me,” appearing stunned by what had just happened.
Despite the quick response from staff and emergency crews, Dennis Recker was pronounced dead minutes later.
The staffs eventually reported the incident to the local police department, leading to a criminal investigation.
During the investigation, detectives uncovered evidence which suggested that Harriett Recker may have planned her husband’s death in advance.
This included financial documents, and handwritten notes which were discovered in her purse and home.
Detectives also found out that she had even mailed one letter to a neighbor, and these findings all point toward premeditation.
One of the notes reportedly read:
“To you all, this has just been too much for me; I so wish I could do it with the wonderful family we have, so many good friends. He can’t have a life without someone, and that someone can’t be me as I am just not strong enough or smart enough to do all this.”
Neighbors and community members have been left shaken by the tragedy.
Ted Dwemoh, a Beaufort County resident who once provided pest control services for the couple’s Sun City home, said he was stunned when he heard the news.
“I was shocked. They were such a kind couple. You would never expect something like this,” Dwemoh told local reporters.
Family members also told investigators they had never seen Harriett with a gun before, making the event even harder to comprehend.
Harriett Kay Recker has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. She is currently being held without bond at the Beaufort County Jail.
After hearing from investigators during a recent court hearing, the judge determined there was probable cause to send the case to a grand jury, where prosecutors will seek a formal indictment.
As the case continues to unfold, many in Hilton Head are struggling to make sense of how a couple who had been married for decades ended in such a devastating tragedy.
