On Wednesday, July 15, 2026, police arrested 58-year-old Michael Foster and charged him with murder, manslaughter, and ten counts of criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the shooting death of his niece.
The Mount Vernon resident is accused of killing 39-year-old Julia Anderson in what investigators have described as an ongoing family battle over the inheritance of a home, though authorities have not yet released the full details of that dispute.

According to police reports, the violence unfolded just after midnight on Tuesday along Murdock Avenue in the Wakefield section of the Bronx, as per Abc7NY.
Anderson was sitting in the driver's seat of her Jeep Grand Cherokee when shots were fired through the passenger-side window, striking her twice in the chest, according to police.
Officers who arrived at the scene recovered two shell casings from the street, and Anderson was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where she was pronounced dead.
Anderson had just completed a night shift as a caregiver at a group home for developmentally disabled adults in Wakefield and was on her way back to her residence in Mount Vernon, a trip of less than a mile.
Her mother, Beverly Patterson, said she grew worried when the usual sounds of her daughter returning home never came.
"She usually comes home at 12 in the night, and usually when she comes home, I hear some kind of little noise, that's how I know she's home," Patterson explained. "But then I was like wondering what happened."
Her younger daughter later arrived with the devastating news, and in Pattersons words, "My heart felt like it was going to come out."

Family members shared a photo of Anderson and described her as a hardworking woman who dedicated her career to helping people with disabilities.
Her sister, too distraught to speak on camera, confirmed that Anderson had just wrapped up her night shift before the attack.
Neighbor and coworker George Henriques spoke of the grief that has gripped those who knew her. "I felt so much for that poor girl, you don't know, I think I'll have a heart attack," Henriques said.
Loved ones also revealed that Anderson was just one month away from turning 40, a birthday that should have been a celebration but has now become a painful marker of loss.
Foster remains in custody as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the inheritance dispute that allegedly led to the shooting.
