Kayla Sedoskey: Man Sentenced to Life for Ex-Girlfriend’s Murder in Chilling Plot Involving Six Roommates

A man in Monroe County Michigan has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a cold-blooded murder that was done by a bizarre "family" of six people.

Steven Bails, 43, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend, 23-year-old Kayla Sedoskey in Frenchtown Township.

Sadly, she was a target in a deadly conspiracy orchestrated by the man she loved and the people she once called friends.

On February 15, 2023, Kayla Sedoskey arranged for a romantic date with one of her former roommates —21-year-old, Brin Smith.

Around 10 p.m. Kayla left her apartment for the date and sadly, that was the last time she was seen alive.

For weeks, her family heard nothing until March 2, 2023, when a group of teenage boys exploring the abandoned Boyville Juvenile Delinquent Center made a chilling discovery.

They found Kayla’s body on the floor of an abandoned gym in the building, with candles placed around her and a strange bronze liquid covering her.

They immediately called 911 and when responding officers arrived, they assumed it was a case of drug overdose. However, medical  experts confirmed that Kayla had been shot twice in the back of the head at point-blank range, leading to a homicide investigation.

When Kayla's mother, Paulette, spoke with investigators, she pointed them toward 43-year-old Steven Bails, her daughter's former boyfriend who had recently been released from prison.

Paulette said that Kayla’s two-year relationship with him was troubled, with several domestic violence arrests and Kayla becoming very distant from her family.

She also provided critical information about Kayla's final movements, telling police that her daughter had planned to spend the evening of February 15 at a friend's apartment near the Russell Street Bridge.

When officers pulled surveillance footage from the apartment building, it showed Kayla crossing the parking lot and walking northbound before getting into a black Mercury Milan.

Subsequent investigation showed that the vehicle was registered to Steven Bails, making him an immediate suspect.

When investigators tried to contact Bails for an interview, they learned he had just married 25-year-old Narina Cherry on Valentine's Day and left for an extended honeymoon in Florida on the morning of February 15.

They also found out that Bails was living in a one-bedroom apartment with six other roommates, meaning seven people were staying there in total.

The people living in the apartment were Steven, Narina, Steven’s 24-year-old daughter Sierra Bemis, 21-year-old Brin Smith, 33-year-old Kaylyn Ramsay, 28-year-old Alex Feko, and Kayla, who had lived there until January when she moved out.

When investigators tried to reach and question the roommates, they realized that all of them had left town around the same time Steven left. The only person who was still at the apartment was Steven’s 24-year-old daughter, Sierra Beimis.

When detectives questioned her, Sierra described a bizarre and controlling living situation with her father. She told detectives that her father required everyone in the apartment to carry identical green pocket knives and wear green headbands. She said they obeyed him as a leader and that he referred to them as a "family" rather than a gang.

More critically, she revealed that Steven was romantically involved with Kayla, Kaylyn, and Narina, all at the same time, creating intense jealousy and conflict within the home.

Police records confirmed that both Kalin and Narina had filed multiple complaints against Kayla.

When police searched the apartment and Steven's car, they found a trove of incriminating evidence, including Kayla's identification card, numerous burner phones, candles matching those found at the crime scene, and a haunting handwritten will for Kayla.

Scattered throughout the apartment were jackets, clothing, and phone cases all branded with the words "The Grim Reapers," along with a notebook containing wedding plans referring to Steven and Narina as "Grim" and "Lady Grim."

The case took a new direction on March 11, 2023, when Brin Smith walked into a police station and told detectives that he had a video of one of their roommates, Kalin Ramsay confessing to Kayla's murder.

In the video, Ramsay described shooting Kayla and disposing of the gun in a river. But when detectives examined the recording closely, they saw Bales and Smith in the phone's reflection and it looked like they were giving her signs on what to say. Because of this, investigators believed the confession was staged to frame Ramsay.

Also, when Smith was asked about his relationship with Kayla, he denied having any contact with her after she moved out.

However, phone records showed that Kayla's last call on the night she was murdered was to Smith, and text messages showed they had been exchanging romantic messages for a week.

CCTV footage from a nearby convenience store showed Smith driving Bales' Mercury Milan that night, but when confronted with the overwhelming evidence, Smith requested a lawyer.

When Ramsay returned to Monroe, she went for an interview with police and denied any involvement, calling Kayla a sweetheart and claiming they had no conflict.

But when detectives showed her the confession video, she said Bails and Smith had told her what to say before the recording, which can be seen in the interrogation footage below.

After detectives mounted pressure on the other roommates, Alex Feko eventually admitted to supplying the murder weapon, while Sierra Beimis gave a full confession of what really happened.

According to police reports, Kayla’s murder was a wedding gift from Bails to his new wife and it was planned by six people who had each been assigned a role.

Brin Smith's job was to lure Kayla to Boyville through romantic text messages, while Bails and Ramsay would be waiting inside.

Feko brought the weapon, Beimis acted as lookout, while Cherry monitored police scanners from the apartment.

As for who actually pulled the trigger, the truth may never be fully known, as both Steven Bails and Kaylyn Ramsay blamed it in each other

On April 14, 2023, officers found Bales and Cherry hiding in a bedroom in North Carolina, and after a four-hour standoff that included tear gas, they were taken into custody.

During his interrogation, Bials tried to act like a grieving ex-boyfriend and denied any involvement, saying he still loved Kayla. However, his wife, Narina Cherry, cooperated with investigators and gave a full confession.

All of them were later charged, and they all accepted plea deals except for Steven.

In the end, Alex Fico received five years for supplying the weapon, Narina Cherry Bails got 13 years, while Sierra Beimis received 18 years.

Kaylyn Ramsay and Brin Smith, were each sentenced to 40 years in prison, while the kingpin Steven Bails was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

As of March 2026, the abandoned Boyville Juvenile Delinquent Center has been demolished, and the area where the brutal crime once happened is now a parking lot.
