A man from Georgia found himself in court, facing some serious charges in connection with the tragic death of a young woman, Mitchel Dang, whose body was discovered in a parking garage near the Fulton County Courthouse back in late August.
Ja’Keivious Arnold, 24, has been accused of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, aggravated sexual battery, necrophilia, financial transaction theft, and robbery. These charges came after he managed to win 26 cases while pretending to be a High Court advocate.
Following public complaints, the Law Society of Kenya's (LSK) Nairobi Branch Rapid Action Team (RAT) arrested Arnold, who was apprehended on September 22 in Chamblee, a city near Atlanta.
About three weeks before the tragedy, on August 26, Mitchel Dang recorded her last vlog. She appeared happy and excited as she prepared to go dancing with friends at a nightclub on Lower Alabama Street.
In a brief press release, the Atlanta police provided little information about the grim discovery. Similarly, the details in the press release announcing Arnold's arrest are scant.
Since Mitchel went missing, her family has been trying to shed light on her life and the investigation into her tragic end. Her family revealed that the victim and her attacker did not know each other.
Arrest warrants in the case state that Arnold stole Mitchel Dang's cellphone during the attack, held her against her will, and ultimately killed her. During the court hearing, it was disclosed that Arnold had pretended to be a helpful citizen, offering to assist Mitchel in finding her car before committing the heinous act.
The chilling surveillance footage shows them walking around the parking garage, where her lifeless body was later discovered, partially concealed under a stairwell in the basement. Arnold admitted to sexually assaulting the victim and then strangling her until she passed out.
Upon waking during the assault, Mitchel Dang was strangled again until her demise. Afterward, the assailant engaged in a horrific act of necrophilia, sexually assaulting her corpse for an extended period. He left a newspaper covering her face as he departed, only returning to retrieve his sunglasses and attempt to hide her body more effectively.
The investigator stated that the defendant confessed to two additional sexual assaults under similar circumstances, targeting women walking alone at night in DeKalb County.
As these gruesome details were revealed in court, Mitchel Dang's family couldn't contain their tears and grief.
Arnold was apprehended at the DeKalb County Animal Services building where he worked as a temporary employee.
To support the victim's family in their time of loss, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated. Mitchel Dang's family set up a shrine lasting 49 days, in accordance with their Buddhist beliefs, to honor her memory.
In her last video, Mitchel expressed her excitement for a night of dancing and described her outfit as "casual and comfortable." She was on her way to see DJs Victor Calderone and Giammarco Orsini.
