In a heart-wrenching incident that took place on June 24, 2023, a 71-year-old man is scheduled to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate's Court for the alleged murder of his 26-year-old son in Mentz village, located in Malesa, just outside Mankweng, South Africa.
According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the spokesperson for the Limpopo police, the authorities received a report of a shooting in the area and swiftly responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, they discovered the victim lying on the street in a pool of blood. Ledwaba stated, "Further examination revealed that the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body."
Emergency medical services were called to the scene, and tragically, they pronounced the 26-year-old man dead.
Initial investigations conducted by the police indicate that the victim was shot by his biological father, who subsequently barricaded himself inside the house.
After negotiations, law enforcement persuaded the suspect to leave the premises, and he was subsequently apprehended.
During the arrest, the police seized a revolver, which was allegedly used in the commission of the crime, along with three live rounds of ammunition and two spent cartridges.
As of now, the motive behind this incident remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the murder, as stated by Ledwaba.
Expressing her dismay, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, described the incident as "unique and senseless."
She expressed her disappointment, stating, "Parents are meant to love and protect their children, but the actions of this elderly man are extremely disheartening.
I hope that justice will prevail in this horrific incident."
