Law enforcement authorities have announced the arrest of a 20-year-old man from South Carolina in connection with a drive-by shooting that claimed the life of 6-year-old Winston Hunter.
Michael Lloyd is the third suspect apprehended and charged in relation to this tragic incident.
According to Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell, Lloyd was taken into custody without incident in Ontario, New York at approximately 2 a.m. on Monday. He currently faces one count of murder as per the sheriff's office.
Sheriff Ravenell expressed his determination in a press release following the arrest, stating that law enforcement agencies nationwide collaborated to locate the suspects.
He condemned the senseless act, emphasizing that a child's life was taken away due to the actions of these cowards.
During a press conference, Sheriff Ravenell announced the arrest of another suspect, 19-year-old Ethan Thorne Anderson, who was charged with murder, attempted murder, and weapon possession related to Hunter's death.
Anderson appeared for a virtual hearing before Calhoun County Magistrate Judge Robert Lake, who denied him bond on the murder charge.
An unidentified 17-year-old suspect was also apprehended in New York and charged in connection with the shooting. Due to the suspect's age, their name was not disclosed.
Sheriff Ravenell confirmed that efforts were underway to extradite the juvenile back to South Carolina.
The tragic incident occurred on the evening of Friday, May 13, when Hunter and his family returned to their Woodford home after a family gathering.
A bullet was fired from a passing vehicle in front of their house around 11:35 p.m., fatally striking the 6-year-old.
Surveillance cameras captured the vehicle, described as a two-door gray sedan, fleeing the scene and turning onto Highway 321 minutes after the shooting.
Sheriff Ravenell revealed that investigators believe the suspects initially met in West Columbia with intentions to engage in a drug transaction or robbery in the Woodford area.
However, Hunter and his family were not involved in these activities and became unintended victims of the ensuing violence.
Surveillance footage of the suspected vehicle was released, leading to its discovery by the New York Police Department (NYPD) on May 18.
The vehicle was subsequently stopped again on May 19, resulting in the arrest of the 17-year-old suspect. Authorities have also recovered several firearms believed to have been used in the crime.
The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office urged anyone with additional information about the case to come forward by contacting them directly or providing anonymous tips to Crimestoppers.
