In Borno State, Nigeria, a man named Abdullahi Isa has been arrested by the police for reportedly subjecting his wife to inhumane treatment, including locking her up and starving her for nearly two years.
Comrade Lucy D. Yunana, an activist advocating for women and children's rights, confirmed the incident and stated that the arrest took place on Friday, June 30, 2023, in the Gwange 3 area of Maiduguri.
During an awareness campaign on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Gwange by Ms. Yunana, her staff members were guided to the house of the woman by the Chief of the area, where they discovered the woman in a deplorable and dehumanized state inside a room.
The sight they encountered was shocking and prompted them to report the situation to the relevant authorities in order to save the woman's life.
They immediately took her to the hospital, where medical professionals are working to revive her.
The suspect, Abdullahi Isa, claimed that he and his wife had seven children together, but all of them had passed away.
He alleged that his wife was tormented by an evil spirit, which was his main reason for locking her up.
