In a tragic turn of events during a youth football game in Texas last year, Yaqub Salik Talib, the brother of retired NFL cornerback Aqib Talib, has pleaded guilty to murder.
The incident took place in 2022, resulting in the shooting death of 43-year-old coach Michael Hickmon.
Talib, 40, entered his guilty plea on Thursday and is set to be sentenced in August to 37 years in prison, as agreed upon.
According to reports, the shooting occurred during a heated brawl among adults at the youth football game in Lancaster, a Dallas suburb.
Witnesses reported that Talib pulled out a gun and shot Hickmon multiple times.
The fight initially erupted due to a disagreement between the opposing coaching staffs over calls made by the officiating crew.
However, it was later revealed that it got heated when Hickmon went to retrieve a football, which someone kicked away.
Both Talib brothers' sons played on one of the teams, while Hickmon's son was on the other team, as per The Dallas Morning News.
After the shooting, Yaqub Talib left the field and later turned himself in to the police.
His attorney stated that while his client deeply regrets the loss of life, he surrendered to have the opportunity to share his side of the story.
Aqib Talib, a well-known five-time Pro Bowler, announced his retirement in 2020.
He was previously involved with Prime Video's "Thursday Night Football" but stepped away from the role following the tragic shooting incident involving his brother.
