In a Florida court, shocking details emerged about the death of Abdul Rahman, a shop employee who was fatally beaten by the shop owner after an alleged incident involving a customer complaint, according to authorities.
Abdul Rahman, 59, suffered a brutal assault before being left to die in the entrance of an Aldi supermarket near Norwood Junction station last year.
Agash Jeyanandam, 24, the owner of Counter News, reportedly confessed to his girlfriend the following morning that he was infuriated and took Mr. Rahman to the shop's basement, where he assaulted him with a rod-shaped weapon.
Darren Parchment, 21, and Vijay Pethuru, 24, were also present during the attack, as stated.
All three defendants, Jeyanandam, Parchment, and Pethuru, have pleaded not guilty to the charges of murdering Mr. Rahman.
During the trial at the Old Bailey, prosecutor Paul Cavin, KC, outlined the events leading up to the severe beating that Mr. Rahman endured in Jeyanandam's shop on the evening of August 6, 2022.
The court heard that a woman named Sarveswari Selvaseelen contacted the police on August 8, the day after Mr. Rahman's body was found.
She reported that her ex-boyfriend, Agash Jeyanandam, had called her and confessed to beating someone who subsequently died.
According to her statement, Jeyanandam claimed that a customer had complained about Mr. Rahman putting his hands inside his trousers while talking to a child. Out of anger, Jeyanandam took Mr. Rahman to the shop's basement and assaulted him with a weapon.
He also mentioned that two others were present during the beating. Rahman's body was found at 5:36 am by a taxi driver who noticed his ripped trousers and lack of breath.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene discovered his lifeless body lying face down in the doorway, with severe blunt trauma to his head and torso, multiple fractures, and lacerations and bruises all over his body.
The injuries were consistent with a savage beating, causing significant pain and likely impairing Mr. Rahman's ability to breathe.
The Crown's case suggests that Mr. Rahman died as a result of the attack he endured.
Agash Jeyanandam was arrested at his home the following day and made a statement to the police acknowledging the severity of the incident.
Darren Parchment and Vijay Pethuru were apprehended three days later.
CCTV evidence presented in court showed three individuals leaving Counter News and turning into Station Road, near the location of the attack. Prosecutor Paul Cavin highlighted this footage as a significant piece of evidence.
Jeyanandam's defense argued that Mr. Rahman had engaged in inappropriate behavior prior to the incident, following and chasing a young girl, which provoked Jeyanandam's anger and led to the assault. However, Jeyanandam denies the accusation of causing Mr. Rahman's death.
The trial is ongoing at the Old Bailey, where further evidence and testimonies will be presented.
