The incident occurred in Ybor City, Tampa, on a Monday July 17, 2023 around 5:00 PM, following reports of a woman being stabbed.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found a woman with multiple stab wounds, and she was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police Chief Lee Bercaw mentioned in a press conference on Monday night that the suspect, a 33-year-old male, was identified as the father of the victim's children.

He had committed the stabbing in front of their children, aged between 2 and 6.

After the attack, the suspect loaded the three children into an SUV and drove to his brother's house. There, he dropped off the children and stole an AK-47.

Around 40 minutes later, the police located the fleeing suspect at a busy intersection in Tampa.

"Our officers spotted the suspect's vehicle at 5:40 PM near Dale Mabry (Highway) and Spruce Street," Chief Bercaw said.

The officers attempted to pull the suspect over, but eight minutes later, he crashed into another driver and began firing the assault rifle at the pursuing police.

"Multiple officers returned fire, striking and killing the suspect," Bercaw confirmed.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave pending a use-of-force investigation, but thankfully, none of them were injured during the gunfight.

Chief Bercaw commended the officers' actions and expressed confidence that they would be cleared of any wrongdoing.

He emphasized that the suspect posed a significant threat to the community and showed no regard for human life. The chaotic events witnessed in the community were deeply tragic and unsettling.
