Authorities Say That Miami Dade Police Director Is Recovering After He Shot Himself in The Head During An Argument With His Wife

Miami Dade Police Director, Freddy Ramirez, is getting better at a Tampa Hospital.

The President of the Police Benevolent Association confirmed he's awake and talking.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Florida Highway Patrol held a press conference on Monday about the self-inflicted shooting.

Commissioner Mark Glass confirmed Ramirez suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, with no other injuries.

Ramirez, 52, was critically injured on Sunday after shooting himself during a law enforcement conference trip to Tampa.

Law enforcement sources say it happened while he was in the car with his wife along Interstate 75.

He was taken to Tampa General Hospital and underwent surgery, and he is now in critical but stable condition.

The Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating the shooting.

Ramirez and his wife were in Tampa for a meeting when an argument took place outside the hotel.

A passerby claimed to have seen Ramirez threatening to kill himself.

Tampa police questioned them, but both denied it, and there were no eyewitnesses.

As a result, Tampa police decided not to arrest or commit Ramirez to a mental health facility. They left the hotel, but later, Ramirez shot himself on the road in Tampa. The motive for his attempt is not clear.

Ramirez had announced plans to run for sheriff next year and was named police director in 2020.

The mayor's office and Miramar Police Department expressed their support and wishes for his swift recovery.
