In a shocking incident, Pittsburgh police have apprehended a man for a brutal assault on a newlywed during their honeymoon.
Heiko-Lamar Calhoun, 26, from Wilkinsburg, faces charges of criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, and recklessly endangering another person.
The distressing event unfolded at the Even Hotel on Forbes Avenue around 7 p.m. on Monday. Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of a male being attacked in the lobby.
The victim, identified as 41-year-old Larry Gilmore, was discovered unconscious and bleeding profusely from severe head injuries. He was rushed to UPMC Mercy hospital in critical condition.
Shalawrae, Larry Gilmore's wife, to whom he had just tied the knot and is reportedly expecting a child, tearfully shared that she found her husband "in a puddle of blood."
According to court documents cited by TribLive.com, the assailant approached Gilmore from behind, put him in a chokehold, and violently slammed his head into the ground.
The suspect allegedly continued the attack by kicking and stomping on Gilmore, even stealing some of his belongings, including his pants.
The accused, Heiko-Lamar Calhoun, described as homeless, appeared in court on Tuesday morning and is currently held in custody at the Allegheny County Jail.
District Judge Nicholas C. Martini denied him bail, as reported by TribLive.com.
Meanwhile, Larry Gilmore's family has established a GoFundMe campaign to support him with medical expenses.
The initiative has garnered nearly $4,000 towards its $10,000 goal as of Thursday.
Family members of Gilmore praised him as a "loving father of three," with the anticipation of welcoming a fourth child in December 2023.
Heiko-Lamar Calhoun's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday, August 7.
