A horrifying investigation is underway after the body of a 32-year-old man was found naked inside a barrel in Malibu on Monday.
The discovery was made when a maintenance worker from a state park spotted a black plastic 55-gallon drum floating in the Malibu lagoon on Sunday afternoon.
Using a kayak, the worker brought the barrel ashore but found it too heavy to open, so they left it there. It was not until Monday morning that the barrel was finally opened, revealing the body inside.
Lifeguards had also noticed the barrel in the lagoon earlier on Monday but were unable to bring it ashore due to its weight.
Eventually, they managed to open the barrel and made the grim discovery. Fire crews were called in to help move the barrel to land.
The identity of the deceased has been confirmed as 32-year-old Javonnta Murphy, but there is no information yet on how long the body had been in the drum or the cause of death.
Authorities are unsure where the barrel came from, speculating that it might have drifted in from the ocean during high tide.
Witnesses reported seeing the barrel floating off the coast, with one person claiming to have seen it at Leo Carrillo Beach. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are considering how to handle the situation.
