Kentucky Woman Indicted for Alleged Abuse and Neglect of Elderly Mother After She Allowed Her Mother To Die From Injuries She Sustained During A Fall

Karen McDonald, aged 67, endured weeks of neglect, lying on the floor of her daughter's home before finally receiving medical attention. Tragically, she passed away just one day after being admitted to the hospital.

Now, her daughter is facing multiple charges related to neglect and abuse.

Abra McDonald, aged 49, was arrested in June for allegedly mistreating and neglecting her 67-year-old mother in Kentucky. However, it was only on September 6 that she was officially indicted by the district attorney following a grand jury recommendation.

According to records from the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office, Abra McDonald faced initial charges of first-degree wanton endangerment and two counts of knowing abuse of an adult upon her arrest. She remains in custody with a bond set at $250,000.

Detective Lieutenant Matt Bryant of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office revealed that a medical report identified sepsis as the primary cause of her mother's death. This sepsis was a result of severe neglect, as Karen had been left on the floor for an extended period following a fall in their shared residence.

Bryant expressed sadness and concern over the situation, stating, "It is very sad and very troubling to understand." Authorities have not provided a clear reason for why Abra left her mother unattended for such an extended period.

Abra McDonald is scheduled for her arraignment on September 21.

In June, around the same time Abra McDonald was arrested for allegedly mistreating her mother, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear called for action to protect seniors from abuse in the state.

Kentucky has nearly 800,000 seniors, and according to NBC affiliate WLEX, the state's Adult Protective Services Hotline received nearly 20,000 reports of abuse or neglect in 2022. However, fewer than 8,000 of these complaints led to full investigations.

Governor Beshear emphasized that nearly 1 in 10 individuals over the age of 60 in Kentucky had experienced abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
