Organized Crime Suspected in Athens-area Shooting: Six Lives Tragically Lost

In a tragic incident near Athens, Greek police reported that a horrifying attack claimed the lives of six individuals through fatal gunshot wounds. Authorities suspect that this violence may be connected to gang-related activities.

The police statement revealed that the discovery of the bodies occurred in Artemida, located approximately 12 miles east of Athens. However, the statement did not provide extensive details regarding the shooting's circumstances or the identities of the victims.

State-run ERT television suggested that this shooting might be linked to an ongoing dispute among organized criminal groups. All the victims, identified as men, were found lifeless both within and around a vehicle, the tragic result of gunfire from at least one handgun.

Reports from Greek newspaper Proto Thema shed additional light on the incident.

They shared video footage that purportedly depicted the police presence at the scene following the shooting. According to Proto Thema, the targeted vehicle had German license plates, and a startling 25 shell casings were discovered.

Investigators are actively searching for a car and a motorcycle believed to have been used by the assailants.

Greece has witnessed a series of killings attributed to gang warfare in recent months, with some reports speculating that these incidents may be linked to fuel smuggling. However, the scale of the tragedy on Monday, resulting in six fatalities, stands as an unusual and alarming occurrence.

In a related incident in June, a 37-year-old former convict and alleged bodyguard was fatally shot outside his home in Athens' Korydallos district alongside another individual. A year earlier, a 38-year-old petrol station owner met a similar fate at his establishment in the Athens suburb of Gerakas.

It's noteworthy that Kalashnikov assault rifles, known to be a preferred weapon in organized crime activities in Greece, were utilized in both of these prior attacks. The family of the petrol station owner later revealed that he had become a target for "extortionists and organized crime figures" due to his refusal to participate in an illegal operation.
