Traffic Stop Escalates: Massachusetts Man, Douglas Hagerty Crashes into Home, Stabs Police Chief and Officers

A man from Massachusetts, who attempted to flee from a traffic stop, initiated a high-speed police chase that concluded with him crashing into a residence and subsequently assaulting five officers, including the local police chief, before being apprehended, as per authorities.

The officers from Taunton were harmed in their efforts to apprehend Douglas Hagerty, aged 35, hailing from Lakeville, Massachusetts, on Tuesday evening.

One officer sustained slash wounds on the face, neck, and back and was transported to a hospital in Boston, approximately 30 miles (50 kilometers) to the north. The remaining four officers, which included one who was stabbed in the arm, received treatment at a local hospital.

Among the injured was Police Chief Edward Walsh, who was at the scene due to his proximity. He suffered a stab wound to the stomach but was treated and subsequently released. The condition of the officer taken to the Boston hospital was not immediately provided.

According to police reports, Taunton officers attempted to halt Hagerty, whom they alleged was driving recklessly. Initially complying, Hagerty subsequently sped away, nearly colliding with an officer.

During the pursuit, Hagerty intentionally drove toward a police cruiser, struck another vehicle, and ultimately crashed into a relative's residence. The police followed Hagerty into the house, where he brandished a knife and allegedly attacked the officers.

Hagerty was apprehended and transported to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for injuries to his hand. He faced arraignment on Wednesday in Taunton District Court and is presently held without bail.

A dangerousness hearing is scheduled for October 17.

Hagerty faces multiple charges, including assault and battery with intent to murder and three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. There is no listed phone number for Hagerty, and his attorney, Daniel Rich, did not respond to requests for comment.
