In a devastating turn of events, the estranged husband of a young mother from Virginia, Avriel Hooks, is facing serious charges. Avriel's lifeless body was discovered in a wooded area late August, a week after she was last seen by her family. Michael Lee Perry III, 21, was arrested and charged with her murder.
The Lynchburg Police Department initially deemed Avriel's disappearance as "suspicious" when her family expressed concern over her sudden and unusual lack of contact. Avriel's mother, Ashley Pittman, received a text claiming Avriel was at a friend's house for some "me time," but it didn't sound like her daughter's usual communication.
Six days after Avriel's disappearance, police questioned Perry, considering him a person of interest. Later that day, her body was found in a wooded area in Amherst. Perry was subsequently arrested on charges of second-degree murder and unlawful disposal of a dead body.
He remains in custody without bond.
Records indicate additional charges against Perry, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violation of pretrial release conditions. These charges stem from incidents dating back to August 2020 and August 2022.
Court documents reveal that Perry was under pretrial supervision due to a previous theft and emergency protective order violation case involving Avriel.
Ashley Pittman disclosed that Avriel had filed for a protective order on July 4, but Perry stole her credit card on July 7 when she attempted to extend the order. Unfortunately, the protective order lapsed, allowing Perry to be released on bond.
Tragically, the following month, while still under pretrial supervision, he allegedly took Avriel's life.
In another disturbing case, a man who fatally shot his cousin using an AR-15 rifle, then proceeded to hide the body, set it on fire with kerosene, and let it burn for six hours, has received a 15 to 30-year prison sentence, as ruled by a judge. See detailed story here
