The Edo State Police Command has taken into custody a 24-year-old final-year student from the University of Port Harcourt, Victor Ochonogor.
He stands accused of fatally stabbing his girlfriend, Success Regha, in a tragic incident that occurred on Monday.
This distressing event unfolded at 10, Osahon Street, Ogheghe Quarters, situated off Sapele Road in Benin City.
Ochonogor, a student pursuing a degree in Applied and Industrial Chemistry, and his late girlfriend were reportedly locked inside their residence when a violent altercation ensued, resulting in both parties wielding knives and inflicting stab wounds on each other.
The state's Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Dankwara, made the revelation during a press conference held on Tuesday in Benin.
The initial report of this incident was brought to the attention of the police by the suspect's landlord, Emmanuel Momoh.
Ochonogor allegedly used a knife to stab the deceased in her neck and chest. In his account to the press, he mentioned that he had been in a relationship with his late girlfriend for three years.
He expressed that during her visit from Asaba to Benin, she accused him of involvement in kidnapping, a claim that infuriated him.
"I have been dating her for three years now, and she accused me of being a kidnapper. I asked her why she was accusing me of being a kidnapper," Ochonogor stated.
In addition to this tragic case, the police also paraded one Etinosa Omoregie, affiliated with the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, on charges of murder.
According to the police commissioner, the suspect allegedly shot a person named Eric, who was subsequently rushed to a hospital and tragically lost his life.
Further arrests made by the police include Efosa Osayande, 31, who is accused of publicly sharing explicit images of his ex-girlfriend, and Friday Igberase, who is facing allegations of rape.
