A man was taken into custody by authorities in connection with the tragic deaths of two of his children, who were found with lacerations on their bodies at a residence in Los Angeles County on Saturday.
In a recent update, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office announced that Prospero Serna was arrested for the offenses of Murder and Child Abuse, following a thorough investigation by homicide detectives. Serna's lack of cooperation has caused delays in the booking process, as indicated in the statement.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to a call regarding potential child abuse at a home in Lancaster, California, where they discovered four children under the age of 10, two of whom had non-life-threatening injuries, while the other two suffered severe lacerations.
The children were immediately transported to a hospital, where two were tragically pronounced dead, and the remaining two were reported to be in stable condition.
Serna, identified as the father of the four victims and a resident of San Bernardino County, was initially detained as a person of interest. The ongoing investigation is being closely monitored by the sheriff's office.
Expressing her distress over the incident, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger emphasized the need for strengthening child abuse prevention programs and family support services, acknowledging that some families may slip through the cracks despite the county's efforts.
According to details from court documents, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, Serna has a criminal record dating back to 2006, including a 2014 charge of battery on a spouse that was later dismissed.
He also had two temporary restraining orders filed against him in 2016 and 2021 by a woman, the mother of his children, and a man, respectively, although the case involving the man was eventually dismissed. The latest information from court documents revealed that Serna lost custody of his four children to their mother in 2022.
