A former police chief from a small town made headlines after being apprehended for shoplifting at a Walmart in one of Florida's renowned retirement communities, as confirmed by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
The individual in question, Christopher Radz, aged 59, found himself under arrest around 4:30 p.m. on October 5 at a Walmart located in The Villages, as detailed in an arrest affidavit obtained by FOX 35 Orlando.
He faced a charge of petit theft, alleging that he was observed by one of the store's loss prevention officers picking up several items from a display, placing them into a Walmart plastic bag, and leaving without making an attempt to pay for the items at any of the checkout points, as per the deputies' accounts.
When taken into custody, Radz was apprised of his Miranda rights and opted not to engage in conversation with the arresting deputy, as reported by Villages-News.
Radz's professional background included serving at the Alsip Police Department in Illinois for a lengthy period spanning 32 years, from 1985 to 2017. Villages-News reported that he began his career there as a dispatcher and steadily climbed the ranks until he was appointed as the police chief in 2009. His service in this capacity continued until his retirement in 2017.
Based on the most recent census population data for Alsip, the village boasted just over 18,000 residents.
In response to the news of Radz's arrest, Chief Jay Miller, the current police chief, expressed his surprise, remarking, "The actions described in the media are not in line with the character of the Chris I worked with for over a decade. I hope Chris can address any potential needs that may have arisen in the six years since his retirement while the Florida courts ensure that justice is served."
Subsequently, Radz was taken into custody at the Sumter County Detention Center, with bond set at $500, and has since been released.
