A 13-year-old boy from Florida is in serious trouble, and here's what went down. He's accused of stabbing and killing his mother while his baby sister, only 14 days old, was lying in her crib nearby. They're charging him with first-degree murder, and, believe it or not, they're treating him as an adult.
This young boy's name is Derek Rosa, and he's from Hialeah, Florida. The tragic event happened on October 12 when he allegedly killed his mother, Irena Garcia, who was 39, right in her bedroom. When the cops showed up, they found Garcia dead with multiple stab wounds in her neck. The baby sister, thankfully, was unharmed.
Now, they're putting Derek on trial as an adult, and he's being held at the Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation facility. His dad and grandma were there in court to represent him, and the grand jury officially charged him. They made emotional pleas, saying that this incident was out of character for Derek. His dad mentioned that it's a terrible tragedy, and no one would have ever expected it from his son.
The judge ordered that Derek be held without bond and transferred to the Metro West Detention Center. He'll stay there until the judge reviews the defense's request to return him to juvenile custody.
According to Lt. Eddie Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the Hialeah Police Department, Derek, who's actually an honor student at iMater Charter Middle/High School, called 911 around 11:30 pm and confessed to killing his mother. He even mentioned that he took pictures and told his friends about it, asking if that was bad.
The police think he waited for his mom to fall asleep and then attacked her. But here's the thing, it's not what anyone would have expected, especially for an honor student.
As for the neighbors, they were completely shocked by the news. They described Derek as a calm and helpful kid who would assist his mom with things like carrying packages and shopping bags. No one had any clue about what could've happened, and there were no previous issues or police visits at their home.
Derek lived with his mother, baby sister, and stepfather, who worked as a truck driver. The stepfather was away in Georgia when this all went down. Now, Derek's baby sister is with their grandmother, and he's set to face a judge in an arraignment hearing next week.
