Life Behind Bars for Indiana Man Who Gunned Down Neighbor

In Indiana, a 30-year-old man is set to spend the rest of his life behind bars for the murder of his 59-year-old neighbor. He ruthlessly gunned down the older man, believing he was "hacking his network."

Cy E. Alley received a 70-year prison sentence from Delaware Circuit Court Senior Judge Marianne L. Vorhees for the August 2022 killing of Gerald Lee Copley.

A jury swiftly found Alley guilty of murder and a sentencing enhancement for using a firearm in the commission of a felony after just 20 minutes of deliberation last month.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that on August 23, 2022, Alley shot Copley twice with a 12-gauge shotgun, reloaded, and shot him two more times. The court remarked on the brutal nature of Alley's actions, comparing him to a predator chasing his prey as he approached the victim and fired two more shots.

According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies responded to a shooting at Copley's residence on August 23, 2022. Witnesses observed Alley shooting Copley multiple times before driving away in a black Ford F250. Copley was found shot multiple times and was pronounced dead.

Alley was later apprehended without incident, and a shotgun shell similar to the one found at the crime scene was discovered on his person. He confessed to the murder, claiming he believed Copley was hacking into his network.

Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Hoffman stated, "Cy Alley will has now been held accountable for brutally executing Gary Copley in his own driveway. Although nothing can bring Gary Copley back, it is my sincere hope that this will be the first step in the healing process for Gary’s family and friends."
