Michigan Horror: No Death Penalty for Man, Rashad Maleek Trice, Accused of Strangling 2-Year-Old with Pink Cord
Federal prosecutors announced on Thursday their decision not to pursue the death penalty for Rashad Maleek Trice, 26, who stands accused of a horrific crime involving the kidnapping and subsequent strangulation of his ex-girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter, Wynter Cole-Smith, with a pink cellphone charging cord.
Given that the state of Michigan does not have the death penalty, Trice will not face the possibility of capital punishment in either his local or federal cases.
According to authorities, the incident began on the evening of July 2 in Lansing, where Trice allegedly attacked his former partner, inflicting stab wounds and subjecting her to sexual assault. Despite her injuries, the woman managed to defend herself and escape.
Trice then reportedly abducted Wynter, along with the 1-year-old child he shared with his ex, before fleeing the scene in a stolen Chevrolet Impala. The following morning, a law enforcement officer in St. Clair Shores attempted to initiate a traffic stop, resulting in a brief chase that culminated in a collision with a police car.
Although a substantial amount of blood consistent with Trice's injuries was discovered in the vehicle, along with fragments of a pink charging cord, Wynter was nowhere to be found, sparking an intense search effort.
It wasn't until July 5, close to 7 p.m., that authorities located Wynter's lifeless body in an alley near Coleman A. Young International Airport, the pink cell phone charging cord still in close proximity. The authorities cited strangulation as the cause of Wynter's tragic demise.
During subsequent questioning by FBI agents, Trice allegedly confessed to the violent altercation with his ex-partner, stating, "I am already a monster." Despite Trice's denial of involvement in Wynter's abduction, the grisly evidence and his own admission have painted a damning picture of the events leading up to the heartbreaking loss of young Wynter Cole-Smith.
