The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office reported that a woman from New Jersey was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after purportedly stabbing her 5-year-old granddaughter multiple times.
Law enforcement officials were summoned to a Paterson residence following reports of a stabbing. They discovered the young girl with several stab wounds and proceeded to apprehend 51-year-old Aurora Villacorta, the child's grandmother.
According to Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, the 5-year-old victim is in stable condition.
Villacorta faces charges of second and third-degree aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and two additional weapons charges.
Details regarding Villacorta's legal representation were not immediately available. A pre-trial detention hearing for Villacorta is scheduled for October 16, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office.
If found guilty on all counts, Villacorta could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison.
