A tragic incident occurred in New York, where Jasmer Singh, a 66-year-old Sikh-American, lost his life after an altercation that followed a motor vehicle collision.
The circumstances of his death have raised concerns within his family and the wider Sikh community, with fears that he might have been targeted due to a potential hate crime.
According to the New York Police Department, Singh was involved in an accident in a residential area on Thursday afternoon, and he succumbed to his injuries the following day while receiving medical treatment.
His son, Subeg Singh, took to social media to share the devastating news, hinting at the possibility of a hate crime and requesting prayers for his father's soul.
In an interview with CBS News, Subeg emphasized the severity of his father's injuries, indicating that he believes the incident should be thoroughly investigated as a hate crime. Concerns over a potential bias-related attack intensified following the recent Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East, as highlighted by the Department of Homeland Security.
The Sikh Coalition, along with local community organizer Japneet Singh, has also called for a comprehensive investigation into Jasmer Singh's death, citing his visible Sikh identity as a significant factor in the case.
Meanwhile, Singh's wife, who was present during the tragic event, is reportedly struggling to cope with the traumatic experience.
Police have arrested Gilbert Augustin, 30, on charges of manslaughter, assault, and fleeing the scene of the accident. While Augustin's lawyer declined to comment on the specifics of the incident, he expressed condolences for Singh's family and described the event as a deeply regrettable occurrence.
