Over the weekend, a heated argument at a baby shower in Michigan ended in tragedy as a grandmother lost her life due to a fatal gunshot. As per information from the victim's family, the incident resulted in her close friend being taken into custody by the police.
Local reports from ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV and CBS News reveal that during the baby shower, a woman in her 40s allegedly shot another woman in her 50s following a dispute that unfolded at a Detroit residence.
The victim has been identified as Phebe Williams by her family, who have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support her.
Relatives disclosed to WXYZ-TV that the alleged perpetrator was a long-time friend of Williams, although she had not been officially invited to the baby shower but attended anyway. The argument that escalated into this tragic event was reportedly centered on one of Williams' sons, who was also present at the baby shower and happened to be the nephew of the victim's niece. The suspect, whose name remains undisclosed by the police, had accused Williams' son of wrongdoing and had even visited the local police station regarding the matter in the days leading up to the incident.
According to Shavonda Carter, Williams' niece, the argument became physical when the victim allegedly struck her friend before the fatal shooting took place. Carter expressed her disbelief, stating, "Y'all could have just fought. You didn't have to pull a gun. There's kids in the house. It's a lot of people in the house, so why would you pull out a gun?"
Detroit Police Captain Donna McCord, as reported by local station WDIV-TV, claimed that after the shooting, "the female fled to our Detroit police 9th Precinct, and the victim’s son followed her to that location and struck her with his vehicle."
The suspect is currently receiving medical treatment in a local hospital and is in temporary serious condition, as confirmed by the police.
It is noted in the local media that both the suspect and the victim's son are in police custody, but no charges have been officially announced as of yet.
The family has started a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the funeral expenses, emphasizing that Williams is survived by two sons and three grandchildren. The fundraiser pays tribute to her, describing her as a beloved individual known for her caring and kindness towards others and the joy she brought to those around her.
