A man, Daniel Gunnarsson, 23, has been sentenced to 27 years and four months to life in prison, with 892 days credit for time served, following his conviction for the murder of Katie Pham, 21, in Kern County, California.
According to available records, Gunnarsson's relationship with Pham turned sour after a brief romantic involvement. He exhibited increasingly hostile behavior towards her, culminating in the tragic incident.
Accounts from witnesses revealed that Gunnarsson displayed signs of animosity and distress leading up to the murder.
On the day of the incident in May 2021, he lured Pham to his stepfather's residence in Kern County, where he led her to the RV garage.
During the investigation, it was determined that Gunnarsson, wearing gloves, brutally attacked Pham with a 24-inch ice ax, striking her multiple times in the head, neck, and face.
Subsequently, he engaged in inappropriate behavior with her remains.
The heinous crime was discovered when painters at the residence heard screams and disturbances emanating from the garage. Upon entering, they found Gunnarsson drenched in blood, with Pham lying face down on a mattress topper.
In a vigil held in honor of Katie Pham, her father expressed the community's longing for justice to be served, allowing his daughter to rest peacefully and the community to find solace.
