Unexpected Mishap: Woman Run Over by Self -Driving Vehicle in San Francisco

In San Francisco, a woman was discovered with life-threatening injuries late on Monday after being hit by and trapped under a self-driving car, according to authorities.

First responders rushed to the scene at 5th and Market Streets just after 9:30 p.m., where they found the woman pinned beneath the left rear axle of a stationary Cruise autonomous vehicle. San Francisco Fire Captain Justin Shore, at the scene, told FOX KTVU about the incident.

Shore mentioned that rescuers couldn't gather information about the extent of the injuries or how the victim ended up beneath the vehicle because there were no drivers or passengers present to provide details.

Police officers provided immediate assistance to the injured woman, and medics swiftly transported her to the hospital due to the severity of her injuries, as stated by Officer Robert Rueca, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department.

Authorities clarified that the self-driving vehicle remained at the accident site, and no driver was inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. The duration of time the woman was trapped under the autonomous vehicle remained uncertain.

Cruise, the company responsible for the self-driving car, provided an account of the incident through a social media statement issued early on Tuesday. The company explained that the incident began with a hit-and-run by a human driver.

According to their statement, "At approximately 9:30 pm on October 2, a human-driven vehicle struck a pedestrian while traveling in the lane immediately to the left of a Cruise AV. The initial impact was severe and launched the pedestrian directly in front of the AV."

Cruise claimed that their driverless vehicle reacted promptly by aggressively applying the brakes to minimize the impact. They also noted that the driver of the other vehicle fled the scene, while their autonomous car remained on site at the request of authorities.

The company expressed their primary concern for the injured person's well-being and emphasized their cooperation with the police in identifying the responsible driver.

The San Francisco Police Department's Traffic Division is leading the investigation and has requested anyone with information about the collision to contact them at 415-575-4444 or send a text tip to TIP411, starting the message with SFPD.
